In October 2017 I began an online gift store, selling beautiful products from independent makers and designers. This new business venture opened up a whole new world to me, it introduced me to the hard work and hard decisions taken by individuals in order to deliver a product that was unique and of high quality. Some of these small businesses were also very conscious of the impact their product and their processes had on the environment. I greatly admired these businesses, that even when it meant not taking the 'easy road' or the cheaper option, their passion for environmental issues came first.
Beginning my own business also connected me to an array of different people on social media sites. I really began to see a lot of posts regarding the enormous problem plastic is causing in our world. I was also increasingly seeing the problems caused by plastic on TV programmes, the news, and newspapers. It seemed like an impossible situation and a bigger problem than you and I can solve. However, seeing the efforts and passion people had in order to tackle this problem was inspiring. We can all make changes in our lives that will surely help reduce the amount of plastic we use. We can only hope the large corporations and governments will do the same but if we come together and say NO to plastic, they will have to listen.
I wanted my business to be plastic free but there were certain products that I sold that didn't do this. I did have some plastic free products, and where possible my packaging was too, but I couldn't be half in. The only way to ensure I was entirely plastic-free was to begin a plastic-free store. This will allow me to fully commit to this within my business. The products I will sell will be plastic free and their beauty and quality are not compromised but definitely enhanced.
So here I am, a new journey for me and the business. It's only the start but I hope to learn loads more about the changes we can make to lead a plastic-free life and I would love it if you joined me!
