What we put on to our body can enter into our body through the blood stream. So when we add skincare products that are not natural, a concoction of chemicals is being unleashed throughout the body. These harmful chemicals have been linked to health problems, skin irritation, cancer and reproductive problems. Such chemicals found in everyday deodorants include, Aluminium, Parabens, Triclosan, Phthalates, Artificial Fragrances, Silicia and Talc to name but a few. Take Triclosan for example, used to prevent bacterial and fungal growth in skincare, it's great at killing bacteria but is also great at growing various bacteria which can make antibiotics ineffective. Triclosan can also cause havoc with your natural hormone balance, weakening your immune system. Parabens is another chemical often found in deodorants which once again can enter the bloodstream and effect your natural immune system. Why are they being used? Well they are cheaper and allow products to last for years and years.
In addition to the effects of harmful chemicals in everyday deodorants we also have the issue of spray deodorants. Inhaling such sprays in a poorly ventilated space means chemicals are being inhaled into the body, once again causing health problems such as breathing difficulties, skin reactions and asthma.
So what's the alternative?
Well the good news is there are alternatives! Thanks to growing consumer awareness of the rubbish packed into most of the skincare products on the market, there is a big shift towards natural skincare products. This thankfully includes deodorants which here at Oak Lane we are very proud to stock. The Natural Deodorant Company which is stocked at Oak Lane was born out of a frustration of the ineffectiveness of other natural deodorants on the market at the time. Laurie wanted to create a natural deodorant that could work effectively and she sure did that!
The Natural Deodorant Co. not only created a product that works, all day, but one that is inclusive of everyone, despite their requirements. There is the 'Clean' range, a great all rounder, the 'Gentle' range, for very sensitive skin or for those who cannot use sodium bicarbonate and the 'Active' range, best suited when doing sports or going to the gym.
As their name suggests, The Natural Deodorant Co. has created deodorants that are 100% natural and free from the usual nasties associated with deodorants such as preservatives, aluminium, artificial fragrances, palm oil and alcohol. Some of the natural ingredients they use include coconut oil, shea butter, magnesium, sodium bicarbonate (no sodium bicarbonate in the gentle range) and various essential oils (none in the unscented deodorant). Unlike the typical 'roll on' deodorants, this one is a creamy balm which is applied by scooping a small amount from the pot, softening with your finger tips and thoroughly applying to your under arm skin. This company is also proud that their products are all registered with The Vegan Society. Their 55g pot (which we stock) is also entirely plastic free and they are working hard to do this with all their products.
I made the switch to natural deodorant well over a year ago and there is nothing that would make me return to the chemical filled ones. There maybe a negative attitude to the higher price of natural deodorants but the knowledge of what is going on to and into my body is worth every penny.
