As with any single use plastic - cotton buds, coffee cups, straws etc. it is easy to think what harm can it really do to our environment? However, when we have a world full of people, all using single use plastic, which may take hundreds of years, if at all to break down, it can do a serious amount of harm. The figures in relation to plastic pollution prove this, according to an article by the National Geographic, a study published recently estimates 8.3 billions straws are polluting our world's beaches! Also, according to an article in the Independent at least an estimated 150 million tonnes of plastic waste is polluting our oceans causing the death of approximately one million birds and at least one hundred thousand marine life. These figures are truly horrendous. The saddest thing about this all - to think this devastating damage to wildlife and marine life is actually avoidable.
Some governments (but nowhere near enough) are taking positive steps for our environment and implementing bans on items such as straws, stirrers and cotton buds. We do however, as individuals, need to keep fighting the plastic tide and refuse these items. Too many world leaders and corporations really don't seem to acknowledge or care about the very serious problem of plastic pollution and climate change.
For those who would like or require a straw, we do thankfully have eco friendly alternatives. There are stainless steel straws which can be used again & again. We proudly stock such plastic free alternatives in our plastic free store Oak Lane. There are also bamboo straws which can be reused and will biodegrade when you have finally finished with them.
